Funk, Friends, and Flashbacks!
Who says you can’t relive the good ol’ days? On August 2nd, I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with some friends at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus, OH, for a night filled with classic funk and R&B magic. We were in for a treat with not just one, but two legendary acts—Midnight Star and Ohio Players. Talk about a night to remember!
First up was Midnight Star. Now, I’ve loved their music for as long as I can remember, but this was my first time seeing a full show of theirs. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint! The moment they hit the stage, it was like being transported back in time. They rolled out hit after hit, and I was instantly reminded why their music has such staying power. Songs like “Freak-A-Zoid,” “No Parking on the Dance Floor,” and “Midas Touch” and one of my favorite slow jams….you got it, “Slow Jam” had us all grooving like it was the 80s all over again. I don’t know about you, but hearing those songs live after all these years was like rediscovering an old favorite playlist that I forgot I had!
But wait, there’s more! After Midnight Star set the stage, it was time for Dayton’s very own Ohio Players to take us home. And let me tell you, they left no crumbs—none! Their full instrumentation and those soulful vocals? Pure fire. From “Fire” (pun intended) to “Love Rollercoaster,” to “Sweet Sticky Thing,” they had the entire crowd on their feet, swaying, singing, and soaking in every note. It was a masterclass in funk, with the band showing off why they’re still the kings of their craft.
The vibe was pure fun from start to finish, and it wasn’t just me and my crew who felt it. Everywhere I looked, people were smiling, dancing, and just enjoying the music. It was one of those nights where you couldn’t help but feel connected to everyone around you, all brought together by the timeless beats and melodies of these iconic bands.
In a world that’s always racing forward, it’s nice to take a step back and groove to the tunes that shaped our past. Midnight Star and Ohio Players reminded us that old school is still cool—and I’m here for it! 💕
