Victoria Theatre, Dayton OH
Great night for Jazz & R&B!!
Summary
These artists together on one night, you can’t go wrong!
Pieces of a Dream opened the evening with high energy from the start and barely let up (except for a couple of slower numbers) the rest of their set! Group founders, keyboardist James Lloyd and drummer Curtis Harmon along with the rest of the band rocked the house! The surprising highlight was the young man on keys, Justin Lee Schultz. When I say ‘young man’, he JUST turned 13!! He is a seasoned veteran already! Be on the lookout for him, Justin is amazing! The band closed their performance with a bit of “Purple Rain”, which touched everyone in the house. Hard to believe Pieces of a Dream has been in the game for over 40 years because I surely wouldn’t have guessed!
Next up, Mr. Sophisticated Soul himself, Will Downing!! His voice is still stirs the soul!
Will, his band and background singers gave us a really good show! It the middle of his set he introduced the band which was fun! He allowed them their own spotlight showing us what they got with their vocals and playing. They went old and new school with a taste of some Chic and Michael Jackson to Jill Scott and Maxwell. Two of my favorite songs, “After Tonight” and “A Million Ways” I was happy to hear him sing, however, I was a lil disappointed because the tempo was increased on both!😕 These are sensual slow jams that, to me should always be performed in the tempo created! He closed out the show with the duet he originally recorded with Rachelle Ferrell, “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like This” but this time performed with his background singer and they both killed it!
Overall it was a wonderful night of music from everyone! We really enjoyed ourselves! I don’t think anyone enjoyed Will Downing as much as the “lady in leopard”! Bless her heart, she couldn’t help but let it be known to Will how much she love him! He was really cool to acknowledge her, but once was not enough for her! We heard her the ENTIRE show trying to get his attention! We ALL know her now, Ms. Teresa E!!! 😁
