2300 Jackson ST | Gary, IN

Summary

Happy Birthday to Michael Jackson, The KING of POP!

I took a solo semi-impromptu trip to his childhood home in Gary, IN to celebrate his life among other fans. I didn’t publicize my adventure in social media “real time” as I normally would have. I think I just needed that ‘moment’ for just me and Michael. On the way there I played NOTHING but Michael/Jackson 5 music. When “2300 Jackson Street” began playing I got goosebumps and teary-eyed..I had to talk myself out of crying!

Although the usual fanfare of events did not happen this year, that didn’t stop the flow of love. Against the backdrop of MJ’s music, the energy was electric and magical as we shared and remembered how much Michael meant to us. The gatherings were intimate but I received sooo much more than I could ever plan, expect or experience. Michael’s 1st cousins, Ron and Keith Jackson were very warm, welcoming and made me (and everyone) feel like a part of the family. Ron was hilarious and had some people believing him when he introduced me as Berry Gordy’s niece! (I wish!) How did that come about? All from me telling him I got the MJ shirt I was wearing from Motown…go figure LOL He and a few others also thought I was a singer/musician?? Interesting because it’s assumed quite often. I ain’t mad though. I told them I simply LOVE music that it must radiate from my soul!

Extra special and HUGE THANK YOU to Keith who took my visit to another level! The family history, the tour of Gary, and sharing how it used to be in it’s heyday.  I thoroughly enjoyed every experience and wished it didn’t have to end! From hitting the road til I got back home, it was a 14-hour day. Barely 2 hours of sleep afterward, but worth it. I’m so happy I went, it was exactly how it was supposed to be. I’m still on a high from it and witnessing Michael’s family love for one another and to us the fans was the icing on the cake.

2300 Jackson Street will always be home…We love and miss you Michael!
