Taft Theatre | Cincinnati OH

From Stage, to Screen, to Stage...
First of all, I have to say, I’m a lifelong fan of the film, “A Bronx Tale.” So of course, seeing the one-man stage play by Chazz Palminteri at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati, OH, on September 23, 2023, was a dream come true. For those unfamiliar, “A Bronx Tale” is more than just a film; it’s an autobiographical story by Chazz Palminteri, born Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri. He wrote and performed this compelling narrative, bringing to life his childhood in the Bronx through 18 distinct characters, all portrayed seamlessly by Chazz himself.
This was my first time experiencing the play, and from the moment the lights dimmed, I was completely engrossed. The stage, adorned with just a single chair, became a vibrant canvas for Chazz’s storytelling. His ability to shift between characters so fluidly made you forget you were watching a solo performance. Each character was distinct, brought to life with unique voices and mannerisms, showcasing his extraordinary talent.
The historic Taft Theatre, with its intimate atmosphere, provided the perfect setting for this performance. The audience was spellbound, hanging on every word. The theater’s acoustics and lighting enhanced the ambiance, drawing everyone deeper into Chazz’s world and the life of young Calogero navigating the complexities of a Bronx neighborhood.
Chazz Palminteri’s masterful storytelling not only brings his personal history to life but also resonates on a universal level. His ability to draw audiences into his world with such vivid detail and emotion is a testament to his unparalleled skill as a performer and writer. This evening at the Taft Theatre was more than just a night out; it was a journey back in time, a shared human experience, and a poignant reminder of the power of storytelling.
Yet, the evening was tinged with a bit of heartbreak. I found out too late that there had been a meet-and-greet opportunity with Chazz Palminteri. Missing the chance to meet him in person, to thank him for his incredible work, and to express how much his story has meant to me was disappointing. Despite this, the power of his performance left a lasting impact, one that I will cherish.
For anyone who has yet to experience “A Bronx Tale” live, I cannot recommend it enough. It’s a powerful, moving, and utterly unique theatrical experience that stays with you long after the curtain falls. Although I missed the opportunity to meet Chazz Palminteri this time, the profound impact of his performance has only deepened my admiration for his work, and I look forward to the possibility of meeting him in the future.
