The King of Pop Lives FOREVER!
Attending “MJ The Musical” at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on May 24, 2024, was an adventure I won’t soon forget. This was my second time seeing the stage play, but my first time visiting Minneapolis. Let me tell you, it almost didn’t happen! From flight delays to insane traffic, it seemed the universe was conspiring against me. But I digress… I MADE IT!
As someone who’s always been a die-hard Michael Jackson fan, seeing “MJ The Musical” again was simply amazing. Those who know me know my love for MJ runs deep; always has, and always will. This production did not disappoint. The actor portraying the adult MJ was maybe a bit short in stature, but nothing short of fabulous in his portrayal of Michael!! He captured MJ’s mannerisms, playfulness, voice, and signature moves nearly perfectly. It felt like watching the King of Pop himself. Not to overshadow the younger Michaels, because they were spectacular as well, embodying the spirit and energy of Michael’s early years.
One thing that stands out about “MJ The Musical” is its unique storytelling approach. It’s not your typical chronological biography from childhood to death. Instead, it offers glimpses into Michael’s world through his eyes, thoughts, and feelings. The narrative focuses on MJ preparing for the “Dangerous World Tour” in 1992, showcasing his perfectionism and the immense pressure he placed on himself to deliver nothing short of perfection all the way. Through his lens, the audience is treated to flashbacks that reveal how he evolved into the iconic artist we all admire. The show’s structure, blended preparations for the tour with insightful flashbacks, albeit at times heartbreaking, kept me captivated from start to finish.
The songs, the dialogue, and the choreography were all top-notch, making for a truly immersive experience. I can’t wait to see “MJ The Musical” again when it tours my city in 2025. For any true King of Pop fans, this is a must-see. It’s a powerful tribute to Michael Jackson’s legacy, celebrating his genius and his indomitable spirit.
