Hometown of "The Voice"
Nestled in the city of Akron, Ohio, lies a gem of R&B history – the childhood home of Howard Hewett. For years, his soulful voice has captivated audiences worldwide, but it all began on the quiet streets of West Akron, where his dreams took root. Although I was not in attendance, the city paid this monumental tribute in October 2021, on Howard Hewett’s birthday. In a fitting gesture, Cadillac Blvd was renamed ‘Howard Hewett Jr Way,’ honoring his contributions to music and his roots in the Akron community.
Recently, I had the opportunity to pay homage to this legendary artist by visiting his childhood home at 1084 Cadillac Blvd. This visit was particularly special for me, as I had the privilege of managing Howard Hewett’s social media for nearly a decade, helping to share his incredible journey and music with fans around the globe.
Finding the house was an adventure in itself though… IYKYK 🤣😂 But really….this wasn’t the usual venture of me getting lost, I truly did not know the address of the house. I reached out to Howard for directions, not wanting to miss the opportunity to see where he grew up while I was in town. With his guidance, I finally found myself standing before the home that had nurtured his musical dreams. I couldn’t help but imagine a young Howard Hewett Jr practicing his vocals, dreaming of the day his music would reach the world. It was a reminder that every legend has a beginning, a humble starting point that shapes their journey. As I was leaving, I discovered just a couple of blocks away was John R. Buchtel High School, where Howard graduated from.
For fans of Howard Hewett, if you ever find yourself in the area, take a stroll down Howard Hewett Jr Way, stop by 1084 Cadillac Blvd. You never know – you might just find yourself inspired by the echoes of a musical legacy that began in the heart of Akron. For me, it was not just a discovery of a famous person’s home, but a celebration of a client and friend.
