Minneapolis MN

Minneapolis is a city deeply intertwined with the legacy of Prince, one of its most celebrated artists. Exploring the various spots associated with Prince feels like uncovering hidden gems that reveal the story of his life and career. I didn’t get the chance to see them all, but here’s a brief synopsis of some key areas I visited where you can feel the presence of Prince in Minneapolis.💜

Paisley Park

Location: 7801 Audubon Rd, Chanhassen, MN 55317

First on the list is Paisley Park, Prince’s private estate and production complex. Now a museum, Paisley Park offers an intimate glimpse into Prince’s life and work. Visitors can tour recording studios, rehearsal rooms, and the private spaces where Prince lived. It’s an essential stop for any Prince fan, offering an unparalleled look into his creative world.

The Prince Mural

Location: 927 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403

Across the street from the famed First Avenue Club, you’ll see a 100-foot-tall mural by the artist Hiero Veiga completed in June 2022. This towering mural of Prince stands as a vibrant tribute to the icon. The mural captures Prince’s essence, showcasing his larger-than-life persona in a striking and colorful display. It’s a must-see for any fan, offering a perfect photo opportunity to remember your visit.

First Avenue Club

Location: 701 N 1st Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403

First Avenue is more than just a music venue; it’s a cultural landmark. Known for its iconic stars on the building’s exterior, each representing an artist who has performed there, First Avenue holds a special place in Prince’s story. It was here that Prince filmed much of “Purple Rain,” and his star on the wall is a pilgrimage point for fans from around the world.

Schmitt Music Mural

Location: 10th St & Marquette Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55403

In 1977, a young Prince was photographed in front of the Schmitt Music Mural, a wall adorned with a massive musical score. Recreating this iconic photo has become a popular activity for fans visiting Minneapolis. Standing in the same spot where Prince once posed, you can feel a connection to the early days of his extraordinary career.

Lake Minnetonka

Location: Minnetonka, MN

While it may be known for its scenic beauty, Lake Minnetonka gained pop culture fame from a scene in “Purple Rain.” Visiting the lake, you might find it too busy to “purify” yourself, but it’s still worth a trip for a quick photo and to enjoy the serene landscape that played a role in Prince’s cinematic legacy.

The Purple Rain House

Location: 3420 Snelling Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55406

This house, featured in “Purple Rain,” is a significant yet currently elusive landmark due to renovations and fencing. However, starting in late Summer 2024, and hosted by Wendy & Lisa, it will be available to rent as an Airbnb, offering a unique opportunity for fans to stay in a piece of music history. Despite the current restrictions, it’s still an essential stop for fans tracing Prince’s steps.

The Prince Store at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport

Location: Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Terminal 1, Main Concourse

Before leaving Minneapolis, make sure to visit the Prince Store at the airport. This store offers a variety of Prince merchandise, from clothing and accessories to music and memorabilia. It’s the perfect place to pick up a souvenir to remember your Prince pilgrimage. The store encapsulates Prince’s spirit and influence, allowing you to take a piece of his legacy home with you.

Conclusion

Finding these spots in Minneapolis felt like unveiling new gems, each adding a piece to the mosaic of Prince’s legacy. While we didn’t get to find everything, the joy and excitement of the journey were unforgettable. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to his music, these landmarks offer a tangible connection to the life and career of Prince, making your visit to Minneapolis truly special.
